MHI Compressor Builds Pearland Plant
Tuesday, 12 May 2015
Japan-based MHI (Mitsubishi Heavy Industries) Compressor Corporation has begun construction of its plant in Pearland, Texas. This project was initiated in response to the shale gas and oil development boom which increased the need of petrochemical plants for compressor services and assembly. The plant is set to be fully operational by early 2015.
Among its many utilities are repair maintenance, manufacturing, packaging and training services. The plant will house 100 engineers and machinists both local and from Japan.
"As the (Texas 288) corridor continues to grow, projects such as MHI's new manufacturing facility help ensure that Lower Kirby District and the Pearland community are well-positioned to capture a significant portion of office, retail, commercial and industrial projects," stated Matt Buchanan, president of the Pearland Economic Development Corporation.
According to MHI Compressor Corporation (MCO) company officials, the Pearland plant would assemble compressors using Japan-made components and would also provide compressor after-sales and equipment modification to their MCO clients.
"In the future, plans call for the U.S. base to also handle material procurement and parts processing through local suppliers, and to ultimately becoming a full-scale production and testing center on a par with comparable facilities in Japan," added MCO company officials.
MHI's ultimate goal is to establish the Pearland plant as an extensive compressor and steam turbine production and testing center which will operate alongside their company in Japan. Due to the gas-rich shale boom, MHI has recorded a large number of equipment orders from U.S-based companies. Company officials stated they have already predicted a large growth in their industry. The company also received numerous orders for compressors that would help plants produce ethylene, a raw material essential for producing various adhesives, coatings and chemicals.
